The Vehicle Maintenance BASIC tracks mechanical defects identified at roadside inspections under 49 CFR Parts 393 and 396 — brakes, tires, lights, steering, coupling devices, and pre-trip inspection failures. This is one of the largest BASICs by volume of citations.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Vehicle Maintenance get so many citations?

Inspectors physically check brakes, tires, and lights on every Level 1 inspection. Even minor defects (a single inoperative marker lamp) become individual citations, so volume is high.

Is a Vehicle Maintenance OOS violation immediately fixable?

Yes — most OOS mechanical violations can be repaired roadside or at a nearby shop, but the violation stays on the inspection report and counts against the CSA score.

Who is responsible — driver or carrier?

Both. The driver must perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections; the carrier is responsible for periodic maintenance and roadside-found defects.
